Hemancipation's biggest marketing challenge is building awareness in a cost-effective manner. The company needs a broad range of people to know about the service so that when they (or a friend) find themselves in the midst of a divorce, that person thinks to call Hemancipation. Company founder Akilah Kamaria had tried a range of different marketing tactics to generate awareness, including running print ads in a number of publications, doing online marketing campaigns and sponsoring events to promote the company, with few results. Kamaria struggled to communicate the company's unique value proposition within the constraints of print ads or with one-line search ads.
